Heat Gun
A bargain heat gun, from box to bill of materials.
Pull it apart, weigh it, name it, fix it. A teardown and eco audit, then small changes: a stainless tip, better screws, an overmoulded grip and a shell that can be sorted for recycling.
ABS for cost and moulding. It softens near the tip.
A NiCr coil. In use, it's where most of the energy goes.
Drives air over the coil and out of the nozzle.

- Brief
- Reverse-engineer a bargain heat gun, then make it tougher and easier to recycle without losing the price.
- Role
- Individual: teardown, bill of materials, eco audit and redesign.
- Outcome
- Four small changes: a stainless tip, machine screws, an overmoulded grip and a shell that can be sorted.
Keep it cheap, make it tougher, and help it recycle.
- 01
Strip
Shell off, guts out. Fan, heater and guards laid bare.

- 02
Weigh
Every part weighed, bagged and logged.

- 03
Audit
Use dominates energy and CO₂ over five years of DIY.

- 04
Fix
A stainless tip, machine screws and a shell that can be sorted.
